Paul Vas Nunes arrived at the final table with a big chip lead which he relinquished only briefly to eventual runner up Emil Pedersen.

Pedersen went from just two big blinds all the way up to the chip lead and it looked for a short while as if he would pull off a stunning victory. But after Vas Nunes eliminated Pim van Riet in third place, the Englishman would never again lose the chip lead and our heads up battle only lasted a few hands.

Vas Nunes, a former winner of the Sunday Million, becomes the first ever UK Champion of a Unibet Open, a surprising statistic given that this is the 18th Unibet Open. Congratulations then to Paul Vas Nunes and indeed all our winners over the last few days.

The Unibet Open will return in December when we be in Latvia’s capital city, Riga – known to be one of Europe’s best party towns. We look forward to seeing you all there.

In the meantime, please don’t forget the two Unibet Online tournaments on the 2nd of October and the 13th of November. And if you want a share of the pot on offer for the winners of our Leaderboard, you’d do well to get on to the Unibet poker client and start racking up those VIP points!

See you next time!

Emil Pedersen raised to 110,000 from the button and Paul Vas Nunes reraised once more, again to 300,000. Pedersen didn’t hesitate too long in making a 4-bet to 1,000,000 and Vas Nunes took some time contemplating his decisions. The Brit asked for a count and on Pedersen’s remaining stack and after being told Pedersen only had a million back, Vas Nunes moved all in and the Dane obligingly called. We were flipping for over 4 million of the 5.2 million chips in play…

Pedersen:
Vas Nunes:

The flop was , neither player held a spade and it was looking good for the Englishman.

The on the turn gave Pedersen some additional outs as now any ten would also allow him to win the pot – the biggest of the tournament – but the river was the , the ultimate blank and Paul Vas Nunes became the first English player to ever win a Unibet Open!

Van Riet:

And that, as they say, is that. The Netherlands are all out of representatives, and Britain is back in the lead, although there’s not much in it between him and Pedersen. Players are taking a one hour dinner break right now; join us back here soon for the thrilling denouement of this Unibet Open.

HIGH NUNES

18:31, August 28th, 2011

A small pot for Paul Vas Nunes, he and Pim Van Riet both checked a flop of .

Van Riet fired out 120,000 on the turn but Vas Nunes made the call to see the river, Van Riet then checked and Vas Nunes bet a suspiciously small 100,000.

Van Riet thought about it for a moment but gave it up and the Englishman regained some chips back.

SMALL BALL FOR PEDERSEN

18:28, August 28th, 2011

Emil Pedersen picked up two small pots, first reraising Paul Vas Nunes preflop and making the Englishman fold, and then picking up the blinds with a button raise.

He lost that small profit back a couple minutes later, though, calling Vas Nunes’ raise in a blind on blind confrontation. They saw an flop and Vas Nunes bet out 220,000. Pedersen decided not to bother, and the chips headed to Vas Nunes.

THE PEDERSEN STEAMROLLER CONTINUES…

UODublin_ME_DSC9729.jpgA rare three-way pot saw a flop of , Emil Pedersen and Pim van Riet checked across to Paul Vas Nunes – the Englishman betting 150,000. Pedersen then check-raised to 380,000 and Van Riet got out of the way, Vas Nunes also lost interest in the pot, Pedersen is now the big chip leader with nearly half the chips in play.
