Warsaw 08

At 16-00 on Thursday, 4th December the cards were in the air and the fourth Unibet Open kicked off! There were quite a few familiar faces on Day 1A, among them Polish heavy-weight boxer Przemek Saleta, poker pros Ville Wahlbeck from Finland and Jordy Veenboer from the Netherlands. Day 1A saw 77 players being eliminated, leaving 42 to go on to play on Saturday’s Day 2.

Day 1B brought even more well known faces, a host of Nordic celebrities, flame-haired Polish superstar Michał Wiśniewski, Dutch actor Sander Foppele. And let’s not forget the most famous of them all: Santa Claus! From Day 1B we had 45 players go through to the second day.

Day 2 started off with Finnish player Tero Salonen being eliminated first – his AK being no match for his opponent’s QQ. We played down to the final 9 players and throughout the day, watched as well known names in the world of poker, including Wisniewski, left the tournament. Erik Dahl, chip leader at the start of the Day 2, was eliminated as well. The bubble boy was Finnish player, Ari-Pekka Kokki, who was eliminated against another pocket pair, AJ vs. 66.

For players not playing, there were many amusements on offer. The players’ lounge offered a friendly place to relax, with comfortable bean bags, Xboxes, a foosball table and, of course, a poker table where those who were up for it could have an impromptu game. For those not feeling up for video games or foosball, Unibet arranged a night out to a few of the many bars and nightclubs in central Warsaw where staff and players partied the night away in true Unibet style.

The Final Table was over in just 6 hours with Simon Johansson from Sweden bringing home the title. Simon pushed all-in pre-flop with K8 and fellow Swede, Christoffer Carlsson, calls with AT, flop comes K25, giving him the pair, the railbirds start clapping and cheering. Turn brings an 8 and even more cheering, and to finish the whole thing off, another King comes down on the river to give Simon the Full House.
