Unibet celebrates five-year anniversary of standalone client

March 2019 marked five years since Unibet Poker launched its acclaimed standalone client.

Unibet has long been dedicated to putting players first, and the launch of a bespoke client in 2014 was aimed at giving all players a level playing field and making poker fun again. Unibet’s vision was to revive players’ enthusiasm in the game by creating a platform where they could enjoy the game on their own terms.

The first build of the new proprietary client was released in 2014, created by Relax Gaming. It was by no means perfect – many features were missing, and the operating system was not ideal as the basis for a poker platform. Rather than abandon poker altogether, or leave players with a sub-standard product, it was decided to take the project one step further and commission a proprietary wrapper program that would be future-proof and designed specifically for poker. In December 2016, the second iteration of Unibet Poker was launched, and this has proved an outstanding success.

Unibet prides itself on being forward-thinking, innovative – and prepared to take risks in order to benefit customers. Important player safeguards have been built into the current Unibet client – third-party programs are not allowed, and nor is seat or table selection. The aim is to make poker fun so that players have a great time, whatever the stakes they are playing at. The smallest games have a very low rake and three alias changes are allowed per day. There are also always plenty of challenges, missions, and integrated promotions and graphics are contemporary – rather than turn of the century. The client is easy to use and there’s a near identical product across all the platforms. Today Unibet celebrates a poker client that is stable and almost feature-complete.

To celebrate the five-year anniversary, Unibet Poker ran a series of promotional tournaments in March with players competing in various “weekend missions” to win entry into special events which came with a total added money prize pool of €15,000.

Kristoffer Bergvall head of Unibet poker said: “Back in 2014, we were well aware that many of our players had started to fall out of love with the game. New players were churning so quickly that it made little sense for us to spend money marketing our product or encouraging players with bonuses and fun promotions. Poker was declining and a new approach was very much needed. It was a bold step to leave the established network model and launch our own client, but it has proved a real game-changer for players.

“We are very proud of what we have achieved. We have remained one of the fastest-growing licensed online poker platforms and we were thrilled to win the International Gaming Awards’ Poker Operator of the Year title last year which was in addition to numerous EGR awards for marketing and innovation gained since 2014.”
