Hilarity at Table 3 as the floor was called over – Quentin Ettlin had raised preflop and had revealed his cards – a pair of sevens – despite the fact that he’d been called by Janno Järvemets a couple of seats down.
When tournament director John Scanlon came over to the table and had the situation explained to him, he reacted with his usual pragmatism. “So?” he said to Ettlin. “Play. Your cards are live.” To Järvemets: “You have the advantage.”
No kidding.
“Seven,” called out some wag at the table, and duly the flop came out :::7c :::2h :::3h giving Ettlin a set.
Ettlin checked. “You have all your options,” Scanlon reminded him. Nevertheless he checked again on the :::Jd turn once Järvemets had checked behind on the flop. Järvemets also checked, and they proceeded to the :::Ts river. Finally Ettlin bet out 2,000, which was enough to make Järvemets fold.
“I had the flush draw,” he said sadly, turning over :::Kh :::Th.
